All On Furniture

A lot of people are looking for new patio furniture and to be honest they don’t always need them. There are many different ways that you can breathe new life in your old chairs and table, and the methods differ depending on the material that has been used to make the furnishing.  If they are wrought iron you are going to  have to apply specific techniques to first clean the surface and have it re-done. If your furniture is made out of wood it is quite an easy job, you need to sand them carefully then apply a new coat of paint or oil to protect the vulnerable material and make it weather proof. With plastic furniture it is not that simple since most of use never even thought about trying to apply a new coat of paint on them – to be honest most of us buy so cheap patio furniture that they don’t last long enought to even need a new finish.

The best and the easiest way to make your plastic patio furniture look like new, or to update them to your new patio design is to apply a coat of paint on them and here are some of the things that you are going to have to keep in mind when you are starting the project. Just like with any other refinishing project you are going to have to start with washing everything carefully.  Take a sponge and a bucket of water with some mild detergent and carefully go through your patio dining set and your chaise lounges to remove all the dirt and everything that might have stuck in them. You might need to use some kind of knife to carefully scrape out anything that has been too long there to be removed this sensitively. You should make sure that you wash every place since if there is dirt in them you are going to have an uneven surface of paint, and this is especially common in the joining parts of the furniture.

You need fine sandpaper to be sure that you are not going to leave an uneven surface, or one that is too rough. There is always a fine coating of a harder plastic that is meant to be covering the surface of the furniture and it will also prevent new paint from attatching correctly. This is also worn down from the places where the chairs are in contact with anyone sitting on them and that is why you need to make sure that you get an even surface everywhere on the furniture. After you have done the polishing it is time to brush carefully all the pieces of plastic away.

You will need to go to the store if you haven’t already bought a primer that is especially designed for plastic. If you are going and don’t know what to look for, then go for an adhesive based primer since they are going to work best on plastic. After you have deployed a fine coat of the primer you are going to have to leave the furniture dry until the next morning. That way you are going to be 100% sure that it is completely dry before you are going to add the second coat. When you wake up add the next coat and let it dry – it is going to make it possible for the paint to attach better.

The actual paint should be something that is designed for painting outdoor plastic, and if it is it will work just fine on your plastic patio furniture. Once you have applied a smooth and an even layer you can add another once it has dried. Remember that the better the results if you add two or three layers but you are going to do fine with just one if you don’t want to do the extra work. Once the final coat has dried completely you can add your patio furniture cushions and enjoy your new look!
